Job Title: Network Engineer

Reports to: Assistant Director of Technology Services

 SUMMARY

The Network Engineer is a collaborative and skilled professional adept in mid to large-size environments. This individual is responsible for managing the evolving operations of the wired (copper & optical) and high-density wireless infrastructure at the client’s facility. The Engineer will play a vital role in coordinating and developing the client’s short-term and long-term technology plans, troubleshooting network issues, and conducting forensic analysis. A proactive approach to improving the network’s performance and efficiency is essential.

MAJOR ACCOUNTABILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Assist in the maintenance, building, programming, testing, and implementing the client’s facility network/backbone to ensure proper function. 35%

•                   Oversee the day- to- day operations of facility wired and wireless networks.

•                   Collaborate with field staff to troubleshoot network issues as they arise.

•                   Recommend and work in conjunction with third party consultants for networking initiatives.

•                   Assist in maintaining full infrastructure as-built documentation and modify as needed.

•                   Evaluate new network technologies and make recommendations regarding integration of these technologies into existing network.

Assist in coordination of all activities relative to short term and long term network plans as well as the development and operation of the client’s infrastructure and core. 35%

•                   Monitor technology trends to ensure that services meet industry standards and determine modifications and improvements where necessary.

Perform troubleshooting by diagnosing and resolving complex network problems/failures; determine root cause and mitigation/remediation efforts to avoid problem recurrence. 20%

•                   Serve as the subject matter expert for all core network-related issues and outages, including day-to-day support and proactive maintenance of network and security.

•                   Interact with carriers and other third-party vendors as needed for remediation.

•                   Work with other staff, vendors, contractors, business partners, and other IT groups to problem-solve and coordinate network functions of all departments to ensure that operating requirements of the client are accomplished in an efficient manner.

Coordinate with other network personnel to ensure that network needs are considered for ancillary functions. 10%  

•                   Ensure connectivity to off-site storage and archives.

•                   Assist in coordinating the development and implementation of the disaster recovery plan.

•                   Support the development and implementation of strategies to maintain network functions at alternate locations in the event of a disaster.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and/or Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from four-year college or university; and four to six years related experience and/or training in a large facility preferred; Experience in design, implementation, and support of complex switching/routing solutions, Infrastructure as a service (IaaS), advanced firewall solutions, and network storage is required. Experience with Internet Service Providers (ISPs) preferred. Experience working with 100+ AP wireless network solutions preferred. Experience with wireless (WiFi) solutions for large public venues a plus.

Other Qualifications

•                   In-depth knowledge of LAN/WAN network topologies and deployment methodologies.

•                   Proficiency with system automation with YMAL, Python, BASH, PowerShell, and Ansible.

•                   Proven experience in supporting, monitoring, and updating routers, switches, firewalls, etc.

•                   Basic to intermediate proficiency of Linux systems.

•                   Working knowledge of HPE/Aruba Core and Edge environments.

•                   Familiarity with VoIP phone systems, including installation, configuration, and troubleshooting.

•                   Comprehensive knowledge of DNS, DHCP, TCP/IP and other common Internet and intranet concepts.

•                   Knowledge of industry change management best practices.

Language Skills

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public. 3

Mathematical Skills

The ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Reasoning Ability

The ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. The ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Computer Skills

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office and with computer operating systems such as VMware, Microsoft Windows, Office 365, and Linux, as well as an intermediate level of network scripting, basic web Automation, Cisco IOS, Aruba OS, HPE, Palo Alto, etc.

Ability to create diagrams, policies, procedures, presentations, etc., as needed for day-to-day management as well as read blueprints/schematics, etc. as needed for planning/issue remediation

Gather and analyze information skillfully, work through problems logically, attempt solutions independently, and think beyond the immediate need presented.
